The knot in my stomach tightens the further we get from Kelowna. All the things I could—and probably should—say are uselessly backed up. Whenever I think about opening my mouth, Felix’s words come back to me.

You’re all over the place.

Jay doesn’t deserve that. Fuck, if I’d cared enough to think about how I was treating Felix once in a while we’d probably still be together.

Though the truth is what I felt for Felix is just a spark compared to the conflagration of emotions triggered every time my gaze drifts toward Jay’s tense, unsmiling profile.

I rest my temple against the cool window. It’s snowing in earnest now, enough to stick. I’ll have to take over before we get to the pass. There’ll be ice up there, and probably a substantial layer of snow on the road.

I must fall asleep, because at some point Jay pulls over and the sudden stillness wakes me up.

“Your turn to drive,” he says curtly.

I peel myself out of the passenger seat and we swap.

The snow comes down thick and wet as I trudge around the truck to the driver’s seat. Revelstoke is blanketed. There’s scant traffic on the highway—everyone’s seen the forecast and they’re holed up at home.

Jay flicks snow out of his hair, his cheeks already flushed from being outside for just a handful of seconds. I turn on the radio and hook up my phone, not eager to drive in silence for the next four hours. Springsteen drifts from the speakers as I turn the key. Jay doesn’t complain, just stuffs his hands in his pockets and tips into the window with his eyes shut.

There’s a big empty space between my ribs that’s filled up with useless energy at the sight of him, zapping me all the way to my fingertips. It’s not an unfamiliar thing. I know what it means.

I just don’t know what to do about it.
